A cold, rainy day led us to Rye Airfield’s homeschool skate. It runs every Tuesday from 12:30-2:30 and it’s a great way to burn off kid energy on a dreary day.
For $5 and the signing of a waiver, you get an enormous indoor park full of ramps, half pipes, and open spaces. At 13 I would have found this place to be a slice of heaven.
My kids don’t skateboard but they do love their scooters! Rye Airfield allows bikes, scooters, skateboards, and rollerblades. Helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads are mandatory! They offer loaners for kids without, but they are too big for most kids and pretty beat up.
There is plenty of space in the “observation deck,” for parents with independent skaters, and also plenty of adults inside the park who are watching over littles. It can get a little rough for the smallest kids-my 4 year old actually had a run in today with a big kid on a mountain bike that left her pretty road-rashed! Also the little kids tend to treat the ramps like slides, often resulting in splinters.
At their website you can find the full schedule and they offer summer and vacation camps, as well as awesome birthday parties!
